For you, a cup of coffee is more than a caffeine fix. You’ve moved past the swill simmering in the office breakroom. And the variety served at large coffee shop chains doesn’t quite cut it. You prefer your coffee brewed from a pour over.
Unlike a coffee pot, a pour over provides the perfect balance of flavor. If you take the time, the process can be relaxing – even therapeutic.
Maybe you’ve come away with the perfect cup of pour-over coffee before. Like a scientist in a lab, you measured, heated up, and weighed everything with exact precision. But then other times the results have been less than rememberable. Maybe you were late for work or you just couldn’t quite remember the process.
Today, we’re going to put an end to that. From now on, you will be able to make the perfect cup of pour-over coffee every time when you follow these 12 steps (with a BONUS Step 13 to enjoy it wherever you go).
Utensils you will need:
Coffee (choose your favorite whole bean variety)
Coffee grinder – Fresh ground coffee provides superior taste.
Coffee scale – This will ensure you pour the ideal amount of water.
Gooseneck kettle – This provides better pour control than a traditional kettle.
Pour over filters – We recommend natural, brown paper filters (the white paper filters are bleached and can affect the coffee’s flavor).
Additional notes:
- Boil twice as much water since you will be using it to prime your coffee filter as well as brew your coffee.
- Use 1 TBS of coffee for every 6 ounces of water you use to make your coffee.
- Use a medium-fine to medium coffee grind. This provides good flavor but isn’t too fine that the grounds will end up in your coffee cup.
12 Steps to make the perfect pour-over:
Step 1: Grind 25g of whole bean coffee.
Step 2: Heat the water to a boil.
Step 3: Unfold the coffee filter and place into the pour-over cone.
Step 4: Place the pour-over cone onto the mug.
Step 5: Wet the coffee filter with the boiled water and dump the water out of the mug.
Step 6: Dump the ground coffee into the moist filter. Then shake the grounds to flatten out the bed of coffee.
Step 7: Place the pour-over cone and mug onto the scale.
Step 8: Zero out your coffee scale.
Step 9: Slowly pour the water into the center of the coffee bed – make sure that all the coffee is wet and the scale reads 50g.
Step 10: Wait 45 seconds for the coffee to bloom.
Step 11: Continue to pour in slow, small, concentric circles, starting at the center of the coffee grounds until the scale reads 350g. Don’t rush this process – find a slow rhythm. The entire brew process should take between two and a half and three minutes.
Note: Avoid pouring the water down the sides of the filter.
Step 12: Allow your coffee to cool for two minutes to prevent burning your mouth or throat.
BONUS Step 13: Pour it into your Elemental Tumbler and enjoy it on the go!
